Bridging-the-Headgate in Nevada

Reclamation in Nevada

Bridging the Headgate in nevadaThe State of Nevada is served primarily by the Lahontan Basin Area Office headquartered in Carson City, Nevada, and the Lower Colorado Area Office located in Boulder City, Nevada. Small portions of the state at its northwestern, northeastern, and eastern boundaries are also served by the Lower Columbia, Snake River, and Provo Area Offices, respectively (see map, and the table of contacts below). Reclamation's Lower Colorado Regional Office is located in Boulder City, Nevada.

Lahontan Basin Area Office, Carson City, Nevada

In Nevada, Reclamation's Lahontan Basin Area Office has entered into an agreement with the Lahontan and Stillwater Conservation Disticts, NRCS, and the Truckee Carson Irrigation District to conduct a series of on-farm irrigation water management and soil quality evaluations. The project will examine on-farm irrigation water management practices, system delivery problems, and soil quality issues related to sustainable agricultural irrigation. The project will initially focus on providing assistance to water users within the Newlands Project, but will eventually expand to cooperators within portions of the Carson, Walker, and Lower Humboldt River watersheds.

As part of this effort The Lahontan Conservation District in Fallon has obtained grants for flow measurement and gathering advance and recession time data.  This data will provide information for use in developing management alternatives and recommending system changes that could result in more uniform and efficient on-farm irrigation with graded border systems. NRCS provided technical support and oversight for these activities by developing a data and evaluation form for recording field gathered advance-recession data. The results were presented at an Ag Forum Workshop held in Fallon about 60 miles east of Reno.

Reclamation sponsors an annual Water Management Workshop. Presentations are made at the workshops by irrigation district managers and employees, Reclamation technical personnel and engineers, guest western states water users, and administrators.  Bridging partners who have participated in the workshops have been provided with a broadened perspective on water supply, storage, transport, delivery, utilization, infrastructure operation and maintenance, and water conservation and assistance issues.

Reclamation, through the Bridging-the-Headgate initiative, provided assistance which allowed several Nevada NRCS personnel to attend Reclamation Water Management Workshops.  NRCS employees were provided an opportunity to see and hear about irrigation district water delivery system operation management and maintenance problems and how they impacted and/or related to on-farm irrigation.  The opportunity provided NRCS personnel with information about Reclamation and irrigation district technical expertise that may have on-farm applications.  It also provided an opportunity to learn more about the other partners and how to leverage partners to work together to achieve common water conservation goals.
