Reclamation in Kansas

The State of Kansas is served by two Reclamation Area Offices. The northern third of the state is served by the Nebraska-Kansas Area Office headquartered in Grand Island, Nebraska. The southern two-thirds of the state is served by the Oklahoma-Texas Area Office located in Austin, Texas (see map, and table of contacts below).

Flowmeter Certification Facility
Kansas University, Kansas Division of Water Resources

Reclamation provided technical and financial assistance for design and construction of a flowmeter certification unit installed in the hydraulics lab, Learned Hall, at Kansas University. Assistance was provided through a cooperative agreement with Kansas Division of Water Resources (KDWR). Reclamation’s Water Resources Research Laboratory (WRRL) provided the technical assistance and financial assistance was provided through Reclamation’s Water Conservation Field Services Program (WCFSP) and Bridging-the-Headgate (BTH) Program. The flowmeter facility provides a local resource where flow measurement accuracy can be certified as traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology. KDWR is also utilizing the facility to conduct flowmeter operator certification courses to provide certification of individuals to field test flowmeter accuracy. The facility will also provide Kansas University with additional education opportunities. The facility was dedicated at a ceremony in February, 2004.

In March of 2005, Reclamation sponsored a water measurement course for Kansas water management personnel. Reclamation’s WRRL provided the training which was attended by personnel from the Kansas Water Office, the Kansas Division of Water Resources, Kansas University, and Reclamation.

Reducing Ditch Losses

Reclamation's Nebraska-Kansas Area Office and the NRCS are working together with the Almena and Kirwin Irrigation Districts in north central Kansas to install buried pipeline as a replacement for high loss open ditch laterals. Reclamation is funding the effort through the WCFSP, and NRCS is providing local design assistance.

Shoreline Stabilization

Reclamation's Oklahoma-Texas Area Office is collaborating with NRCS in the southern part of Kansas on a shoreline stabilization project for Cheney Reservoir. In cooperation with Reclamation and Cheney State Park, NRCS is providing technical assistance in soil bioengineering, riparian/lacustrine management, stream bank and shoreline stabilization, and collection and propagation of plant materials. Plant materials adaptable to the site will be propagated at NRCS's Plant Materials Center in Manhattan, Kansas.
